Registration Policy:

To register or for more information, call 718-229-4000, ext. 0

Pre-registration is required for all programs.

Registration for winter (Jan./Feb./Mar.) classes is on Saturday, December 7.


Payment:

We prefer payment by cash or check (payable to APEC). We will accept credit cards. If registering by phone, you must pay by credit card.


Waiting List:


If it appears that you will be closed out of a particular class, please put you name on a waiting list. Additional classes may be added. You will be notified if that occurs.

Missed Classes:


No refunds or credits will be given for any programs. You may give your spot to another child if the child is the appropriate age for the program. Please phone APEC to let us know the switch of names.

Make-ups are allowed for multi-session programs only if the front registration desk is notified before your child is noted as absent. Sessions running from September through June are allowed two makeups per session. Sunny Bunny participants are allowed three makeups. Sessions running in July and August are allowed one makeup per session.

Age Requirement:


Your child MUST reach the required age for a particular program either before or during the month that he/she begins that program. All programs are drop-off unless otherwise noted. Participants in drop off classes must be toilet trained.

Trial Classes:


APEC does not offer trial classes. Try one of our one-time weekend programs! They are an accurate representation of how we run our weekly programs.

If your membership expires it must be renewed prior to registration day to register at 9 AM.

Vet Tech 101
Ages 10 – 13

All animals need care that goes beyond just food and water. Come learn the specialized skills required to keep our animals healthy. From eye examinations to checking teeth, gums and ears our junior vet techs will learn the ins and outs of keeping some of the most common pet animals in peak condition. Limited to 6 participants.

TIME: 10:00 – 12:00 FEE: $17 Members, $23 Non-Members


Young Chefs - Mac ‘n’ Cheese!
Ages 7 – 12

Young APEC Chefs will prepare Macaroni and Cheese the old fashioned way. Children will grate cheddar cheese, add butter, flour and milk to elbow macaroni and bake it in our oven. All materials included. Limited to 8 participants.

Earth Day – Make A Toy Out Of Recycled Materials
Ages 5 – 6

Join us as we celebrate Earth Day. Learn how you can take care of the very special planet we live on. Make an old fashioned ball catcher toy out of recycled materials. This program includes games, songs, a snack, a craft, live animals, and a nature walk, weather permitting.

Young Discoverers Club - Pond Scum
Ages 8-12

What makes a pond a pond? Who lives there? How healthy is our pond? Discoverers will get a chance to explore our pond and its occupants using binoculars, magnifying glasses and even microscopes to figure out what makes this thriving ecosystem so special. Come look below the surface and see beyond the pond scum! Limited to 8 participants. Snack included.

Science Fair 101 – Flower Power
Ages 7-8

So the teacher says you have to do a Science Fair project. Where do you start? What should you do? Come create one here at APEC. From hypothesis to conclusion children will get hands on experience to collectively create an innovative Science Fair Project that is sure to impress any Science teacher. (Need of a Science Fair project is NOT a prerequisite – All are welcome.) Limited to 8 participants.

TIME: 1:30 - 3:00 FEE: $18 Members, $24 Non-Members


Storytime Safari - Trees
Ages 5-6

Join us as we listen to a nature related story followed by craft/activity time. Enjoy a snack, meet an animal and take a trail walk (weather permitting). Limited to 8 participants.

Animal Care Trainee
Ages 8-12

Would you like to help us care for APEC’s animals? This program teaches children about the interesting job of an animal caretaker. Children will have hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, cleaning and learning all about the needs of APEC’s animals. Snack and animal care trainee certificate included! Limited to 8 participants.

TIME: 10:00 – 12:00 FEE: $15 Members, $21 Non-Members


Children’s Nature Photography, Part 1 of 2
Ages 5-8

Children will be introduced to the basics of composition and nature photography rules while using disposable cameras. During the first class they will practice their newly acquired skills, taking photographs during a nature walk on APEC’s trails. During the second class the children will create frames to mount their favorite pictures. Film developing and all materials included. Limited to 10 participants. Please note; this is a multisession program.

Ages 3- 4

Learn how caterpillars change into beautiful butterflies. Search the trails for munched leaves, creeping caterpillars and hanging chrysalises. Take home your very own caterpillar and watch it change into a painted lady butterfly! Snack included. Caterpillar care and housing instructions provided. Limited to 12 participants. Participants must be toilet trained.

APEC Safari
Ages 6-11

Take a walk on the wild side at APEC. You never know what wildlife you might find when we hike the trails of Alley Pond Park. Explore parts of the park rarely seen and hike trails that are seldom used. Blaze trails as we investigate the spring wonders of the park. Walk will be held rain or shine, so be sure to dress appropriately (and be prepared to get dirty) and wear comfortable shoes. Be sure to spray with bug spray before coming. In case of severe weather, program will run indoors. Snacks will be served when we return to APEC. Limited to 8 participants.

TIME: 11:00 – 12:00 FEE: $6 Members, $12 Non-Members


APEC Adventure Hour - Butterflies
Ages 18 mos. – 36 mos. (parental participation)

Please bring your little one and join us for an afternoon of fun planned especially for the little ones. This program includes games, songs, a snack, a craft, live animals and a nature walk (weather permitting). No non-participating siblings except for infants in infant seats. Limited to 8 parent/child pairs.

TIME: 1:30 – 2:45 FEE: $10 Members, $16 Non-Members

What is soil? What makes soil so important? How is it formed? These are just a few of the questions Discoverers will get to answer during this program. Discoverers will get a chance to go out into the park and do actual soil studies. They will get first-hand experience in sampling from the soil and identifying the organisms that inhabit this very diverse habitat. Limited to 8 participants. Snack included.

Young Chefs - Sautéed Zucchini with Herb Butter & Grilled Cheese Luncheon
Ages 7-12

In French, the word “Sauté” means to cook rapidly in a skillet with a little fat. Our Young Chefs will coat a skillet with butter and herbs, add the zucchini and shake the pan to keep the veggies jumping and turning on both sides. While the zucchini is cooking, children will also prepare a delicious grilled cheese sandwich to complete the meal. All materials included. Limited to 8 participants.
