Our
Mission
APEC offers the Field Biology Internship for
sophomores and juniors and the Senior Independent Internship for
seniors. This program is geared toward introducing
students to environmental field
studies in the hope of increasing a joy and understanding of the
world around them, and convey these sciences to students in a
manner to which they can relate.
Our
Internship
During this FREE Internship, which has been underwritten by The
New York City Environmental Fund, students will experience the
adventure of participating in field research. They will learn
how scientists use hula-hoops to study biodiversity and how to
identify some of the common birds that populate this area. Each
student will receive FREE materials; a field notebook and a
variety of field guides. Throughout the course of this
internship, students will gain confidence in scientific inquiry
and learn the basics of species identification as we explore and
understand the over 635 acres of Alley Pond Park.
The APEC Field Biology Internship offers seven classes in the
Fall, Spring, and Summer to high school sophomores and juniors (10th and
11th grade). Fall and Spring classes are Saturday morning, between 9am and
12pm, Summer classes are Thursday between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm. Seniors who are interested in the Senior Independent
Internship can contact use for information on setting-up a
program that interests them.
Join us as we explore and examine the water and soil on our many
trails using sampling equipment and scientific inquiry.
Our
Classroom
Most of our sessions will begin at the Padavan Pavilion, the
Outdoor Classroom at APEC. After a discussion on the topic and
materials for that week, we venture out into our park to further
explore the day's subject in a more hands-on manner.
Our
Syllabus
The Internship Syllabus is full of many interesting topics that
scientists encounter in their studies of the environment. From
air and water quality to ecosystem biodiversity, students will
experience new challenges each class. Every year new topics are
added and expanded. Past classes have been Estuary Fauna, Pond
Scum, GPS and Orienteering, Water, Soil and Air Testing and
Biodiversity. For a copy of our syllabus, please call
718-229-4000 or email
info@alleypond.com.
Our
Requirements and Application

11th grade). Having taken Living Environment before attending
this internship is a bonus, but not required. If you are a
senior and are interested in the Senior Independent Internship,

meets your needs.
