This year you can share your winter vacation with birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians while learning how these animals cope with the season’s worst weather.  The Story of the Mitten

Ages below

We will read Jan Brett’s beautifully illustrated recreation of the classic tale, The Mitten and find out how
eight forest animals end up squeezed inside a single, white mitten. Watch how the characters are then brought to life with our own recreation of the story using drama, live animals and a craft. This program

Children will be introduced to the basics of composition and nature photography rules while using
disposable cameras.  During the first class they will practice their newly acquired skills, taking
photographs during a nature walk on APEC’s trails.  During the second class the children will create
frames to mount their favorite pictures.  Film developing and all materials included.

Tracking Winter Wildlife

Ages 8-12

Scat, tracks and other clues are left behind as animals travel through the park; join us as we walk the trails
of Alley Pond Park looking for clues of winter wildlife.  Students will make their very own animal track to take home at the end of the class.  We will take a walk rain or shine, so be sure to dress appropriately (and be prepared to get dirty) and wear comfortable shoes. In case of severe weather, entire program will run indoors.

By popular demand we have added a class for 3 and 4 year olds where they can bring an adult to share their experience.  We are going to be learning about our favorite fall fruit, the amazing apple. Children and their adults will learn about apples and where applesauce comes from.  They will make and eat their own applesauce.  Activities include songs, time with our apple loving animals, an art project and of course, an applesauce snack. APEC Safari

Take a walk on the wild side at APEC.  You never know what wildlife you might find when we hike the trails
of Alley Pond Park.  Explore parts of the park rarely seen and hike trails that are seldom used.  Blaze trails
as we investigate the spring wonders of the park.  Walk will be held rain or shine, so be sure to dress appropriately (and be prepared to get dirty) and wear comfortable shoes.  Be sure to spray with bug spray before coming. In case of severe weather, program will run indoors.   Hot chocolate and cookies will be served when we return to APEC.  Limited to 8 participants.

High School Internships

Summer Field Biology High School Internship

APEC is offering a Summer Internship for entering High School sophomores, juniors and seniors.  Over the months of July and August our interns will explore the many habitats and ecosystems of one of New York City’s most treasured parks.  Classes will meet on Thursdays at variety of different locations around our 635 acre park with Alley Pond Environmental Center being the main location to observe and document animals, plants and geological features of each site and research information on these observations to create a comprehensible local field guide of Alley Pond Park.  Please call for more information and our application or visit our website (http://www.alleypond.com/high-school-internships.htm).

This event is open to all that would like to participate and is great for Scout Troops.  Each participant is asked to bring a native shrub (that will provide food and ground cover for some of our native animals),  work gloves, sturdy shoes and clothing that is weather appropriate.  Trees will be provided.

TWILIGHT SPRING PEEPER WALK

 Twilight is the time of day following sunset, when the sky is partially illuminated.  Looking for an unusual and
rewarding way to spend this time of day?  Join Dr. Aline Euler, Director of Education, in observing the 3 ranges of twilight and listening to a chorus of spring peepers at Alley Pond Park.  It may sound like a UFO landing, but these little frogs are just doing what comes naturally during this exciting time of year!

Join APEC Educator Dyan Freiberg for an afternoon hike during the full moon tide to observe the annual ritual of horseshoe crab mating.  Stroll along the shoreline to observe these prehistoric creatures while exploring the various habitats of the intertidal zone.  Come meet the locals!

A Naturalist Visits the Galapagos Islands

 Join naturalist Mickey Cohen for a slide-illustrated virtual tour of the Galapagos Islands.  Mr. Cohen has voyaged to these fascinating islands 19 times and has since delivered over one hundred slide-illustrated lectures on the topic!  Learn about the wondrous islands and the many little known stories of their creatures.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

World Environment Day is the United Nations flagship environmental event celebrated every year around
the world.  The purpose of World Environment Day is to focus worldwide attention on the importance of the environment and stimulate political attention and action.  The event will feature organizations and companies representing various environmental issues, environmental displays, guided walks to Alley Pond’s Urban Forest, live animals, action activities, and guest speakers.

National Estuaries Day Festival

Saturday, Sept. 26, 11:00 AM- 3:00 PM 

Please join us for a festival to commemorate our local estuary Little Neck Bay and meet members of your neighborhood historic, health service, recreational, civic associations, school groups and government organizations.  

Hike along our own unique and beautiful estuary trails, listen to live music, visit educational booths and exhibits from neighborhood organizations, and participate in children’s activities and crafts.  Bring the whole family to enjoy FREE activities, entertainment, hands-on demonstrations, crafts, fun games, fishing lessons, kayak demos, boat and canoe rides!
