Parent Participation- The Story of the Mitten

By popular demand we have decided to add a class for 3 and 4 year olds where they can bring an adult to share their experience.   We will read Jan Brett’s beautifully illustrated recreation of the classic tale, The Mitten and find out how eight forest animals end up squeezed inside a single, white mitten. Watch how the characters are then brought to life with our own recreation of the story using drama, live animals and a craft. This program includes a snack. Limited to 8 children with one adult each.  Please only one adult per child.

Many birds stick around for the cold, winter months. You can help these winter birds as well as the environment by turning a plain, recycled soda-bottle into a beautiful and functional bird feeder. So, join us for a close-up look at live birds and a nature walk in search of these winter survivors in the wild. Then take home your own bird feeder creation and discover the winter birds in your area. All materials and a snack are provided. Participants must be toilet trained.

Magnificent Manatees

Learn to draw and paint manatees and find out why these gentle creatures are endangered by humans.
 We will use an ink and wash technique to capture a unique portrait of this marine animal.  Limited to 10 participants.

Tracking Winter Wildlife
Ages 8-12
Scat, tracks and other clues are left behind as animals travel through the park; join us as we walk the trails of Alley Pond Park looking for clues of winter wildlife.  Students will make their very own animal track to take home at the end of the class.  We will take a walk rain or shine, so be sure to dress appropriately (and be prepared to get dirty) and wear comfortable shoes. In case of severe weather, entire program will run indoors.

Eco-Explorer’s Club
Grades 3 to 6

Join us during the months of January, February and March for a nature club that focuses on helping to improve our environment.  Students will learn to use field guides, binoculars and hand lenses to help identify critters in our park.  Each child will receive materials to take home. Please dress appropriately for the weather because many of the meetings will include a nature walk through our less used trails.  Boots or old sneakers are recommended.  Pre-registration is required.  Snack included.
