Rita Sherman
APEC Board of Directors
Rita Sherman is a founding member of the Alley Pond Environmental Center, a Director since 2005, and President of the Board since 2007. Rita entered the teaching profession as a classroom teacher, specialized in science and computer education, and ended her teaching career as principal of a New York City elementary school.
Very early in her career, Rita was introduced to Joan Rosner, then the district science coordinator for the New York City Public School System. Ms. Rosner and her husband, Hy, were lifelong environmental pioneers years ahead of their time. Ms. Rosner began an environmental training program for teachers and became Ms. Sherman's mentor.
The environment became integral to Ms. Sherman's classroom teaching, and hands-on meant experiencing learning by doing. Ms. Sherman consistently pushed to introduce hands-on environmental education to New York City's school children. She:
| developed nature walks for urban school children | |
| worked with Ms. Rosner to prepare and field test A Place to Live, published by the National Audubon Society | |
| helped to develop The Children's Natural Science Center, which was the seed from which APEC grew | |
| inspired teachers to develop and use more hands-on activities at schools where she was assistant principal and principal | |
| led school groups on visits to APEC | |
| and now leads APEC as we grow in size and complexity |
